Water is one of the basic necessities of life. We require plenty of water every day for drinking, cooking and washing. It is necessary also for cleanliness of homes and hospitals. 

Water is used for various important purposes:

1-Water in Agriculture

Water plays the most important role in agriculture. Agriculture is impossible without irrigation throughout the crop season. irrigation ensures proper plant growth.

2-Water for Municipal Use

Life Style of the inhabitants and their economic conditions affect the water use within the home in different parts of the country. Municipal demand includes water for domestic purposes, commercial uses, street washing, lawn and garden irrigation, fire protection.

Some other important purposes are following:

1- Balancing the Ecosystem

2- Water for Industries

3- Water for Power Generation

4- Water for Navigation means Transportation

5- Water for Fish, Wildlife and Recreation

Causes for Water Crisis

India has built mega-dams for irrigation, but their water management system has not received due attention. We are told that water crisis has touched millions of people across several states. The over-use of groundwater has pushed down the water level far deeper below. Arsenic contaminated water made the problem more grave.

Remedy

During the monsoon, many areas of India are flooded, causing widespread damage to life and property and this enormous quantity of water allowed to flow down into the sea. Rainwater harvesting can help in the preservation of rainwater, which can be used later for several purposes. If the rainwater is harvested and preserved in tanks and reservoir regularly, it may help us to tide over the water crisis, In urban areas, water harvesting should be mandatory. Fortunately, in some states, arrangements are afoot to harvest every drop of rainwater.
